Biography Dr. Robert Martin, MD Wasilla Alaska
After growing up in a small New England town. I graduated from Greenfield High School, the University of Vermont and then Georgetown Medical School.
I moved west and did my medical internship in Portland, Oregon. I also spent time in a remote Indian village on the coast of British Columbia. Later, I worked for the US Public Health Service in Eskimo villages in northern Alaska. The Arctic was a fascinating experience and the health challenges and illnesses were unique.
After the Arctic, I was married and worked briefly in Anchorage at the Alaska Clinic before settling in Wasilla, and have since enjoyed practicing sports medicine and general practice.
Over the years I have been blessed with opportunity to travel extensively. I have lived with families in Europe and Japan. I spent a few weeks with the Mercy Ships ministry in Guinea Bissau in Africa. As one of 2 doctors I was amazed at the fortitude of the African people I treated in light of the abominable conditions under which they live.
Early on in my career, I learned about alternative health approaches, and I began a medical practice in alternative health as well as sports medicine. I had always been an active athlete and so working with athletic and sports injuries was a natural avenue for me. I have spent over 20 years working with young high school athletes and children. For over 10 years I was a team doctor at the University of Alaska in Anchorage. I became closely involved with the hockey team and I was fortunate to participate in our 2 NCAA playoff tournaments, one in Boston where we shocked Boston College by sweeping a highly ranked team, and then again in Detroit at the Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings, where we lost to the eventual national champions. During this time I was also involved with basketball, runners, etc. I was the doctor/ trainer in the summer for the Mat-Su Miners baseball team the year we won the national championship.
I was then selected by the US Olympic Committee to be a clinic doctor for US athletes at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. We probably saw over 100 athletes a day from every imaginable sport from cycling to weight lifters, from swimmers to gymnasts!
A few years later, I was selected to be a Team Doctor for the US team for the World University Games in Korea! Again I was involved with the US Olympic Committee and was sent along with another physician to head up the medical staff for winter games. I worked closely with biathlon, as well as Nordic and Alpine skiing. Fortunately, I ski well and needed to be on the slopes every day complete with a first aid medical back and 2 different walkie-talkie phones to be able to communicate with my trainer who was on another mountain! I also represented the United States at the International Medical Reception at the games.
Currently, I volunteer as the Team Physician for the Alaska Avalanche Junior Ice Hockey Team, and I am a volunteer marshall at a professional golf asscociation tournament every January. One year I had the interesting assignment to be a special marshal for Tiger Woods for 18 holes!
Professionally, I am interested in rejuvenation and health maintenance using aternative health treatments through chelation therapy, electro acupuncture with homeopathic and nutritional remedies, manual osteopathic techniques, exercise and regenerative injection treatments such as PRP and Prolotherapy. We often include nutrition and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement therapy to optimize the patient’s biochemical sytems. I look forward to new and exciting medical educational workshops and attend several each year.
For recreational pursuits, I have enjoyed Sled dog racing and I had the great opportunity to race in the 1981 Iditarod Sled dog race with our own dog team that we raised and trained. I came in 25th out of 65 after a 15 day grueling wilderness trek. I have enjoyed the Alsakan lifestyle by hunting and fishing. Golf, hiking, and a weekly exercise regimen at a local gym along with playing hockey 2-3 time a week keeps me in shape.
As far as sports are concerned, I have maintained my competitive sports inclination by competing yearly in many senior men's ice hockey tournaments around the USA. One of my favorite tournaments is the annual Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament in Santa Rosa, California. This was started by Charles Schulz, the cartoonist and author of Peanuts. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Schulz, commonly known as "Sparky" by his hockey buddies, during one of the tournaments. He was a very generous man.
